Usher’s Band, Good Times Horns, Visit 91桃色

In a rare and exciting opportunity, students at 91桃色 were treated to an unforgettable visit from Mike Burton, Melvin Jones, and Wilbert Williams – the sensational horn section of Usher’s touring band, Good Times Horns. Taking time out of their demanding schedule, the trio engaged with over 100 students studying Foundation Learning courses, as well as students from The Rhythm Studio, housed at Hammersmith & Fulham College, offering invaluable insights into the music industry.

Their visit coincided with Usher鈥檚 ‘Past Present Future’ tour, one of the biggest music events of the year, which includes a 10-show residency at the O2 Arena in Greenwich, where they will perform for over 200,000 fans. During their session, Burton, Jones, and Williams shared their professional journeys, emphasising the skills required to remain relevant in the music industry. They highlighted the importance of resilience in building a successful career – not just in music, but in life. The trio also delivered a breathtaking, impromptu improvisation of Earth, Wind & Fire鈥檚 classic 鈥淕etaway,鈥 leaving students inspired and energised.

Their candid discussion provided a rare behind-the-scenes look at the world of live music, shedding light on the dedication, hard work, and reputation needed to sustain a long-term career in the industry.

Oladisun Majekodunmi, Programme Lead and Foundation Learning Lecturer, said: 鈥淲e were thrilled to have these accomplished musicians share their experiences with our students. Their advice on resilience, career choices, and developing the necessary skills for the music industry is invaluable. Industry Spotlight is an essential part of our efforts to support students in making informed career decisions.”

This visit not only gave students a behind-the-scenes look at one of the most successful tours in recent years but also inspired them to push forward in their own careers.

Marina Clark, Head of Foundation Learning and Business, echoed these sentiments: “Today’s Industry Spotlight event was a wonderful experience for everyone involved. Good Time Horns, a brass band currently touring with Usher, came to the college to play music, answer questions, and share invaluable insights into the dedication, resilience, and passion required to achieve success. Their words were truly motivational, encouraging our learners to chase their dreams, work hard, and believe in themselves. Good Time Horns were not only exceptional musicians but also charismatic, approachable, and entertaining guests, creating an atmosphere of energy and inspiration. It was a fantastic way to conclude the term, leaving our learners uplifted and motivated for the journey ahead.”

The visit continued at The Rhythm Studio , where Good Time Horns watched two talented student bands perform a two-song showcase. The musicians provided positive feedback, further encouraging the young artists.

Marco Tardiola, Sixth Form Lead at The Rhythm Studio, reflected on the event: “All the students were absolutely over the moon, and I hope Mike, Will, and Melvin enjoyed themselves too. They are always welcome for more hands-on sessions – whenever and however they like.”

The Good Times Horns summed up the morning鈥檚 success in their own words. Melvin Jones said: “I鈥檓 inspired by what I saw today. Keep up the great work.”

Wilbert Williams added: “Went to 91桃色 and had an outstanding musical time with exhilarating students eager to learn about the ins and outs of being a professional touring musician. They are so talented and eager to learn, with an overflow of talent! The arts are alive and well here in London, and the diversity and level of musicianship were off the charts. It was both rewarding and reassuring to see how bright the future of music is!”

Mike Burton concluded: “The students and faculty at 91桃色 and The Rhythm Studio truly blessed me today. It was a breath of fresh air to see young faces so enthused and excited about music – real music. Thanks to Mr. Oladisun Majekodunmi for making this all happen. The future of music in London is in good hands.”

In addition to touring with Usher, the trio recently played on two songs for the soundtrack to Robbie Williams’ movie, Better Man, featuring on 鈥淟and of 1000 Dances鈥 and 鈥淟et Me Entertain You.鈥澛燜ind out more about the members of Good Times Horns on their websites:
